GEOG 2030 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Openair, Circulatory System
Document Summary
Readings: (2016) the hidden cost of fossil fuels, (2017) what are fossil fuels used for. Rock-like, gas or liquid resources that are burned to generate power. They include coal, natural gas, and oil, and are used as an energy source in the electricity and transportation sectors. They"re also a leading source of the world"s global warming pollution. Externalities like air pollution and land degradation and other less obvious ones like asthma, cancer and rising sea levels. Two main methods of removing fossil fuels from the ground: Drilling: extract liquid or gaseous fossil fuels that can be forced to flow to the surface, such as conventional oil and natural gas. Mining: used to extract solid fossil fuels, such as coal, from digging and scraping. Both methods have serious health and environmental impacts. Over the past several decades, there has been a gradual shift from underground coal mining to surface mining in the us.
