Rate of gmst increase: faster the warming occurs, less time people and environment have to adapt to alterations. Past warming/cooling periods: skeptics cite that earth has been through significant fluctuations in gmst before; modern human society is only 1-2 centuries old, humans have never had to face a severe change in climate before. : human species and natural world are adapted to the climate we are currently in; we have already become accustomed to the environment we live in, any change would be something that causes us hardship. Unit 2 climate change: evidence & effects. Climate stability: necessary for food and fresh water supplies; people don"t recognize our reliance on it because of centuries of scientific, technological and economic advancements that allow us to continue unperturbed by gradual changes; sudden changes send shockwaves. Permafrost: communities built on permafrost are built on the assumption that it will remain frozen.
