Document Summary

September 19th: the wilderness preservation paradigm and urban environmental justice. To understand the concept of environmental justice, we need to know the history behind the subject, and therefore we need to think about america"s relationship with the wilderness. Frederick law olmstead was a famous us landscape architect and urban designer. He was inspired by birkenhead in the uk to create central park in nyc. He also created parks and park- like suburbs for the us and canadian cities, like mount royal park in montreal. This guy also designed over 30 university campuses, and persuaded the us government to set aside and designate yosemite as the first national park. He wrote about his experiences for people in the city to read, and popularised wilderness preservation. He aided frederick law olmstead in persuading the us to preserve yosemite. Also leopold was another us naturalist and professor of the environment, and he researched and wrote about the vanishing wild places of the usa.
