The problem was not that east germans did not like socialism, but the problem was that they did not like the socialism that they had. The people in the gdr wanted free elections, freedom of press, economic reform, and free trade unions (there was no fundamental progress or change in the gdr society). The society was not progressing the way that young people wanted it to, thus they rebelled against it. War on the huts peace to the palaces.
