Centuries between the collapse of the bronze age palaces and the emergence of the greek city- states. Not a lot of regions had dramaic populaion decline. Others rebuilt on a smaller scale (mycenae and tiryns), but most abandoned by 1125 bc. 1200-1125 bc, movement of mycenaeans into eastern mediterranean (eastern aica, rhodes,cyprus). Coninuaion of some forms of mycenaean way of life and contact with the near east. Some communiies seem to be moving and it beneits them. Early philisine potery very similar to late mycenaean wares. Philisine site of ekron mas a megaron-type structure. Philisines may have originated with sea peoples but they soon adopted canaanite. Break down in trade networks: no greek objects found in the levant or cyprus can be dated conidently to 10-50 to 950 bc. Populaion decline : large setlements like athens and argos contained only 1000-2000 people. Chambers tombs go out of use, and rare replaced by cist burials.
