Last week looked at identifying gaps and areas we need to improve. Not enough r & d done in field of adolescence (emerging adults is term used this week). What we generally believe is one thing, the reality is different. The ideas are based on 3 theoretical frameworks: biological, social, psychological determinism. Many ideas are within them looking at stereotypes. Myth of adolescence as a time of storm and stress is a myth. Emerging adults are often self-focused is a myth. They wish to remain childish is a myth. For emerging adults, becoming one is cost and benefit. Civilized and uncivilized body, illiterate and literate. These binary oppositions are used to discriminate against first nation"s people. Looking at them as inferior and in transitional period. We empty them of their political agency saying they"re not worthy of voting yet. We devalue young, our ways of treating them has changed.
