HREQ 1730 Lecture Notes - Lecture 32: The Roots, The Need
Document Summary
Chapter 8 planning regional and metropolitan communities. Suburbanization: when those who work in an older central city choose to reside in a newer, lower-density community on the edge of the city and shop in yet another locale. Many observers of the growth and spread of cities believed that the natural environment and agrarian activities were being threatened by the demands of modern, capitalist, and urban society. Patrick geddes and frederick le play promoted ways to make the earth more habitable, achieving balance between human and natural factors. Geddes: embodies 2 essential principles of regional planning: 1) the need to take a synoptic approach to regional problems in order to encompass the interrelationships of areas; 2) the planning of each area in coordination with adjoining areas. Geddes notes how areas were unified by either problems of development, or by their resource base, and often by both.
