At the command of apollo, orestes kills clytemnestra & aegisthus for killing agamemnon. After killing his mother, clytemnestra, he is pursued offstage by her furies. Orestes: hermes of the underworld, guardian of my father"s power. Be my savior, stand with me in the pursuit of my claim. (1-2) Orestes & pylades lays a lock of hair on agamemnon"s tomb as a votive offering. They hid as the chorus & electra draw near. Electra & the libation bearers (eastern slave women) visit agamemnon"s tomb. The chorus, libation bearers, & electra, are sent at the behest of clytemnestra who, due to a horrible dream, has commissioned electra to offer propitiatory libations ( rites of atonement 85) to her father"s ghost. Encouraged by the chorus of slave women, electra, calls for vengeance on her dead father for vengeance rather than attempting to appease him for clytemnestra.
