Document Summary
Youth in the 50s & 60s: introduction. Early 1900"s: teens and kids became separate social groups* Child labour laws + enforced education laws put many kids together. They were together for a main part of the day. Psychologists spoke about troubled youth (ex. anxiety) After ww1, teenagers were worshiped as many died during the war. If they fought in the war, then they could make adult decisions. Began to engage in more vices - drinking, smoking, more sex. But continued to do as they were told by their elders. Did not challenge status quo: youth culture, 1945-1957, fashions/leisure activities. Clothes they wore were unique to their age group. They had no facial hare + short hair (curled/buzzcut) Minority were jeans, but they were not allowed in schools. These were usually worn by tough males or drop outs (greasers/juvenile delinquents) Ducktail haircut and leather jackets were worn by hoodlums + gang members.
