Nativism in canada 1900 - 1939: introduction. Nativism: protecting the interests of native canadians against immigrants. Literally means: preference for the native born. Nativism was always in the underlying daily activities. Tends to flare up during economic recessions: early nativism, 1880"s/1890"s: anti-catholic, anti-french. This is the first wave; based on economics. Many were descendants of british loyalists who wanted to keep canada british. Nativists demanded the rights for the french-language schools + catholic schools. These people were devoted to keeping canada british. There were reminders of canada"s british identity everywhere. Ex. iron statues of queen victoria; place names (victoria, b. c. ) Ethnic groups represented 2/3 of the population. Wasp"s began to fear that canada"s identity was harmed by immigrants. ___: french-catholic conspiracy to make canada french and catholic. These people believed that the pope should be the final authority on matters. English-canadians believed that catholicism was going to dominate the world.
