As the population increased and trade around the region expanded, this opened the doors to many other important inventions. Sumerians were responsible for the development of the first type of writing known as a cuneiform (joshua, sumer). It is originally believed that the first writing came about because of long distance trade (kramer, the sumerians: their history, culture, and character). Merchants needed a way to communicate with each other and writing on a clay tablet allowed them to communicate to someone else many miles away (kramer, the sumerians: their history, culture, and character).
