Lecture 9: Television
The four principal narratives modes on television are the following:
1. the theatrical film (original shown in theatres) and the made-for-TV film
(also known as the movie of the week or MOW);
2. the series program;
3. the serial program.
4. TV and the news.
Main components of the classic paradigm for Hollywood Film:
1. Single protagonist: The protagonist is the central character in a film, book,
TV program, or other fictional mode. The story revolves around him or her.!
2. Exposition: The exposition introduces the viewer to two components of the
story; (1) the principal characters’ personas their “personalities”; (2) the space
or environment the characters inhabit.
3. Motivation: In any classical story, something must catalyze events. The
action must have motivation.
4. Narrative Enigma: Narrative Enigmas are there to create questions and
create a progressive story. It is essential to classical narrative that the enigma
must not be solved immediately. If it were, there would be no story.!
