Roman empire and rise of the catholic church. Legal moralism - using law as an instrument to enforce morals. Roman culture was agonistic - competition over honour, noble. Romulus & remus: brothers who are said to of been outlaws or eeing, settled in. Rome, romulus kills brother because of rivalry, gets more outlaws, abduct women and rape them, slave them. War was deemed as honourable, so were speeches, knowing law, rivalry (killing rivals), paying someones debts, have educated wife, have good livestock, etc. Letters of reference were very honourable, often published. Soldier is entry, quaestor - in charge of paying troops (treasurer of army or public project), tribune -, aedile - responsible for infrastructure, food, water supply. If you fail in army or aren"t a quaestor, you have no security of person (can be beaten up) Imperium - power of life and death (if you were higher up in chain of command)
