The hijra from mecca to medina in 622 marked the beginning of a new era for the nascent muslim community. For the first time, they were free to practice their new religion in public, without fear of any persecution. Shortly after his arrival in medina, muhammad purchased property end began to build a house for this household, and a place for the community to come together in prayer - i. e. , a mosque. According to ibn hisham, muhammad encouraged both muhajirs and ansars to participate in the construction of the first mosque (ar. This very first mosque was finished in 623, and it was a simple building, build of brick. In the northern wall, facing jerusalem, was a niche surrounded by stone and marked as qibla - indicating the direction of prayer. Since 621, muslims had been facing jerusalem during their daily prayers. In doing so, they commemorated muhammad"s miraculous journey from mecca to jerusalem.
