Document Summary
When researching and writing academic essays, students are expected to incorporate scholarly sources (books, articles) into their work. These sources are used to support important points and/or to substantiate arguments in academic essays. In order to properly include scholarly sources in their own essays, students rely on quoting, summarizing, and paraphrasing. A good essay will have examples of quotations, paraphrases, and summaries. Quoting is word-for-word (verbatim) repetition of the author"s text, framed with quotation marks. A direct quotation is used to support claims and arguments; to illustrate and argument; or to introduce a writer"s claim, point, or position. Quotations should be used in moderation and they should not exceed 10% of an academic essay. Students must use their own words to introduce the quotation in their essays. Janny smith states: pre-islamic poets produced complex poems that celebrated their values. Although most pre-islamic arabs were illiterate, some could write poetry.
