Ancient greek aesthetics: aesthetic wholeness, permanence, perfection, light, the proportions of the human body provide the ideal for art, proportion, symmetry, harmony. Japanese aesthetics: impermanence (inspired by zen buddhism philosophy, imperfection, darkness and shadows (see in praise of shadows by jun"ichir tanizaki) o, periods of japanese history. Early period era preceding the regency of prince shotoku. Preclassical period time from shotoku till the rise of the kamakura shogunate (late twelfth century) Classical period during kamakura and ashikaga regimes up to sixteenth century. Premodern period tokugawa shogunate until the meiji restoration. Modern period from 1858 onward, japan responded to the impact of the modern and colonial era o: opening to the west. Portuguese traders arrived on the islands in 1543. The first jesuit missionary, francis xavier, arrived in 1549. Jesuits were accommodating to the japanese and their presentation of the christian faith with its heavenly paradise sounded a lot like pure land buddhism.
