The preface was written for shelley by her husband, percy shelley. It indicates that the novel was begun during a vacation in the swiss alps, during a rainy night. Shelley along with her companions spent that night reading ghost stories, which intrigued them to compete in a ghost story writing contest. The novel begins off with a series of letters written by a explorer/ship captain by the name robert walton to his sister, margaret saville. Letter 1: this letter was written while he was in st. petersburgh. He tells his sister about the preparations that were being done for their voyage and that he feels the desire to accomplish something great. He explains his desire to discover the northern passage to the pacific, and to reveal the source of the earth"s magnetism. Also his satisfaction even to setting foot on undiscovered land. Letter 2: walton writes from archangel and talks about the fact that he regrets not having much friends.
