A form of product differentiation- different movie companies specialize in different types of movies. A system of classification- how do we fit this story into similar stories in the past. A category of critical analysis- how to understand genre as a way of understanding how the stories relate to society. Basis of much of the movies made in hollywood. Genre movies are those commercial movies which, through repetition and variation, tell familiar stores with familiar characters in familiar situations. They also encourage expectations and experiences similar to those of similar films we have already seen. Ex western movies most popular until the 60s. Then horror film became very popular for about a decade, the 1930. Musical films was most popular at the end of the 1950s with the coming of sound. ^point is the popularity of films changes over time with what"s going on in society.
