Religion is a universal, or at least ubiquitous, phenomenon to be found anywhere in the world at any time in history, albeit in a wide variety of forms and with di erent degrees of prevalence and importance. Religion is one of the most signi cant possibly the most signi cant factor characterizing each individual society, and that this is particularly true in premodern or otherwise non-western societies.
