Document Summary

These books tell us what happened to odysseus, from when he left troy with all his men. Odysseus"s rst step towards home is kind of like a continuation of troy, because he is still in war. Next he lands at the lotus eaters: it is pretty much a plant that makes you forget, the men of odysseus"s ship go and eat the lotus, and they forget that they wanted to go home. The island after that is the kyklopes island: remember that the phaeacians had to leave their island because of the kyklopes, so they don"t like them either, he describes their island as being untended, and them being uncivilized. Odysseus asks him for hospitality, but the kyklopes eats some of his men instead, trapping them in the cave: to escape, odysseus gives the kyklopes wine and gets him very drunk. This is because he gave that bag to odysseus and told him to open it only in ithaka.
