ITEC 4030 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Elevator, Mental Model, Mental Models
Document Summary
Lecture 2a: cognitive frameworks: how the mind works lets us know how users interact w/ their environment. From this, designers are able to decide how to create the system. Norman"s 7 stage model: gulf of execution: diff btwn intentions and allowable actions, gulf of evaluation: diff btwn actual system state and user"s understanding, design goal: bridge the gulf. Various models: design model: what the designer intends to make, system model: rep of how the system should be, system image: what the user sees, user/mental model: developed by user through interaction w/ the system. Mismatch: when the users mental model differs from the design model, a system image will foster a misinterpretation, also a representation problem, measurements that the designer uses will be diff from what the user is used to seeing. Unix mv example: windows users using a mac will use ctrl and assume that itll work the same as using windows.
