Cosmetic Surgery: Paying for your Beauty
- Jennifer- 9 yr old teacher, , long straight blonde hair, blue eyes
• Spends 40 mins on the stair climbing machine everyday and works out with weights at a
nearby gym 3-4 times a week
• Doesn’t eat meat or sweets and drinks very little alcohol
• Her legs have remained a disappointment to herself
• Decided to have liposuction since she was unable to reshape her legs through diet and
exercise
• She feels guilty about and thinks that its an easy way out (just like steroids for men)
- Cosmetic surgery stands as the ultimate invasion of the human body for the sake of physical
beauty
- People feel that its an invasive procedure- they feel that its an injustice to get any procedure
done
- Some people also find it shallow and think that people who do get cosmetic surgery are all
about exterior and not interior
- Its unsafe sometimes- can lead to side effects that never go away
- Gets addictive just like tattoos
- Desire to reach the state of perfect beauty
- Those who undergo cosmetic surgery appear to be so obsessed with physical appearance that
they are willing to risk their very existence to become more attractive
- 1999- 2.2 mill procedure (44% increase since 1996 and 153% since 1992)
- Most common- liposuction, breast implants, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), facelifts, chemical
peels
- Total number of physicians in the US has doubled in the last quarter of a century
- Cosmetic surgery is painful and risky
- The body is a symbol of selfhood, but its relation to its inhabitant is shaped primarily by the
individuals capacity for material consumption
- Criticisms of plastic surgery ignore the complicated process by which women integrate them
into their identities
