KINE 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Healthy City, Racialization
Playing in Chinatown: A Critical
Discussion of the Nation/Sport/
Citizen Triad
Yuka Nakamura
Chinatown has multiple meanings
Seen ‘authentic’ Chineseness.
Tourist destination
A place to develop citizenship skills.
Chinatown is socially constructed
Meaning that place and location may vary, but it refers to a certain type of people and certain
stereotype.
The view towards the Chinese also changes.
Chinese = unsanitary, immoral (using Opium), legitimizing the creation of Chinatown.
Chinatown in Vancouver was seen as diseased, and is viewed to be contained (cannot go
pass Chinatown).
oCharacterize Chinatown as alien.
A form of tolerating the Chinese.
Even when White people abused Opium, Chinatown was seen as a negative influence to other
areas.
“Chinatown endangers the otherwise healthy city”.
Chinatown is being embraced as proof of multiculturalism in AUS.
oBUT, the existence of racialization and multiculturalism rhetoric ALSO reproduces the
view of mainstream society as White and Others.
Chinatown is a symbol of some essential ‘Chineseness’.
Even though AUS is celebrating diversity, Chinese people are still constructed as outside of
the nation.
