Document Summary

The consequences of structural disadvantage become more pronounced with age. Some of the highest rates of poverty are among the elderly (particularly elder women) Age is experienced differently by people as a function of their social location in context. Essentially if you"re experiencing hardship it gets worse as you get older. Age can be understood as something that is accomplished or performed. We individually and collectively work at making age meaningful. Age is constituted in interaction and gains its meaning via interaction in the context of larger social forces. People construct identities by locating themselves in stories (not done consciously) Through the telling of stories, dominant narratives available in a culture may act to shape not only who we are, but also who we think we can become in the future. Where the participants in the reading got their sources about aging: family members, older teammates, and what they learned in their kin courses (school curriculum).
