KINE 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Neoliberalism, New Approach
Document Summary
Childhood not taken seriously as topic of study. Old approach: socialization, children as adults in waiting, no point to study them as childhood is temporary. Children seen as actively involved, as social actors. Recognizing the agency of children, that children are involved in their own learning. Criticises homogenization of children (that all children go through some developmental process at some point in time) as it doesn"t consider plurality of childhoods, social locations, contexts. Instead it takes social constructivist view: that child is not a natural category and what a child is and how childhood is lived is structured by adult norms, aims and cultures. It takes a village to raise children the idea that children learn from the various adults in their life vs. the idea that children are only raised by their parents. We can all contribute to the wellbeing of one another vs. neoliberalism when discussing childhood it doesn"t support spending tax money on social services.
