KINE 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: John Carlos, Tommie Smith, Conflict Theories
Document Summary
Sociology of sport taking sport as a social construction. Early sociologists looked at sport as a mirror of society, that it reflects what"s happening in society, so whatever happens in society it will happen in sport (e. g. homophobia, sexism). Sport is also a reproduction of society (different from mirror), which means that what we learn in society is reproduced in sport as well (e. g. sexism you throw like a girl constructs femininity as outside the sporting realm). Sport can be a place that resists these broader norms. We see examples of people resisting and overcoming inequity, which can tell us what to do in society (john carlos and tommie smith). Functionalist and conflict theory (whitt reading) sport as a mirror and sport as reproduction of society are more functionalist (the idea that sport serves a particular purpose). Conflict theory revolves around conflict relations (e. g. resistance in sports). John carlos around the time of the civil rights movement.
