Document Summary

Nonspecific response of the body to any demand made upon it, all stress no matter what the cause is, has the same effect on the organism. If too many of these factors happen at once then it becomes difficult to cope and we increase the possibility of developing a mental disability. The stress response: hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (hpa) axis, sympathetic nervous system (sns) Stressor: the stressor may be threatening or exhilarating. Alarm: the body initially responds to a stressor with changes that lower resistance. Resistance: if the stressor continues, the body mobilizes to withstand the stress and return to normal. Exhaustion: ongoing, extreme stressors eventually deplete the body"s resources so we function at less then normal. Illness and death: the body"s resources are not replenished and/or additional stressors occur; the body suffers breakdowns. If there is continual exposure to stress, then the body tends to react in different ways that could lead to illness physically, mentally and emotionally.
