Structure and function: physiology is possible due to the anatomy of the body, structure- function relationship: heart: receives and pumps blood, teeth grind and tear food, greater surface area for exchange- greater diffusion rate. Chemical level: atoms: smallest building blocks of all nonliving and living matter, most common are: oxygen, carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen, atoms combine to form molecules of life i. e proteins, carbs, fats, nucleic acids. Tissue level: cells that are similar tissues, muscle : contracting and generating force. Epithelial sheets: serve as boundaries that separate the body from the external environment lumen: cavity within a hollow organ or tube selective transfer of materials is possible. Body system level: body systems: groups of organs, each system is a collection of organs that perform related functions and interact to accomplish a common activity that is essential for the entire body to work.
