Organic molecules:
- consist of 4:
Carbs
Lipids
Proteins
Nucleic acids
Carbs;
- consist of sugars, starches, glycogen, cellulose ( think celery)
-*human can digest starch to make energy but they can not digest cellulose
although both come from plants
- cant break cellulose cuz our bodies don’t have enzymes that can break it
- function:
provides energy ( glycolysis)
store energy
dietary fibre
provide carbon atom used in synthesis of other molecules
- glycogen is used to temporary store energy
Lipids:
-all insoluble in water
- non polar
- have structural roles in forming some of our membranes/cells
- liquid lipid at room temp will have unsaturated fat ; hyrdrophobic
molecules
- cholesterol sit b/w…..
-cholesterol dissolves right past your plasma membrane
Proteins:
-the shape of protein tells us what function its going to perform
-primary structure refers to order of amino acid (AA)
- order of amino acid is written down from amino end to carboxyl end
