The cell is the smallest structure + functional unit capable of carrying out life processes. The functional activities depend on the structure of the cell (ex. Living building blocks of both plant and animal organisms. Basic unit of life, no cell = no life (here on earth at least) Organisms structural + functional depend on collective structural + functional capabilities of cells. Trillions of cells in human body 200 cell types. Despite variations all types of cells have similar features. Serves as the genetic blueprint during cell replication. Each ribosome makes a different protein, leaves er in a vesicle: rough er. Synthesizes proteins to be secreted to the outside and to be added to plasma membrane + other cell components: smooth er. Packages the secretory package into transport vesicles, which bud off and go to the golgi. Consists of stack of flattened, slightly curve membrane-enclosed sacs. Modifies, packages and distributes newly synthesized proteins. Digestive system of cell: destroys foreign substances.
