KINE 2031 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Circadian Rhythm, Jet Lag, Freerunning
Document Summary
Dna:deoxyribonucleic acid, a self-replicating material present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes. Gene: a unit of heredity that is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristic of the offspring. Chromosome: a threadlike structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes. Allele: one of the possible forms of the gene. Rods: in low light conditions ~100 million. Rhodopsin: a purplish-red light-sensitive pigment present in the retinas of humans and many other animal groups. Located in a disc structure in the photoreceptor. Retinal: pigment that changes shape in response to light and that triggers ion/electrical signals that leads to the brain. Opsin: are a group of light-sensitive proteins found in photoreceptor cells of the retina. When they don t match you experience something called jet lag. - lack of appetite, fatigue, insomnia, and depression: melatonin- hormone.
