- A field of study concerned with various mental processes people experience and use in all
aspects of their lives
- ABCS of psychology: AFFECT (emotion), BEHAVIOUR (why people do things that
don’t make sense), COGNITION (what are the thoughts and perceptions that affect
people’s behaviour)
What is Sport and Exercise Psychology? (google)
Exercise and sport psychology is the scientific study of the psychological factors that are
associated with participation and performance in sport, exercise, and other types of physical
activity.”

What are we really talking about?
- The application of psychology to promote, maintain, enhance, and explain the parameters
of exercise and physical activity
Emergence of Exercise Psychology
- Industrial Revolution value of fitness was recognized
- 1970s and 1980s “Fitness Craze”, popularity of aerobics and weight training
- Recent shifts in perception of exercise:
o Exercise can help reduce stress/mental health challenges (while discussing mental
health, exercise always comes up)
o Individuals can play an active role in maintaining and improving their health
Concerns of Exercise Psychology
- The application of psychological principles to the promotion and maintenance of exercise
and physical activity.
- The psychological and emotional consequences of exercise and physical activity.
Two sides of exercise psychology:
1. Antecedents: things that happen in your brain that lead to the decision to exercise (or
not). Affective part (tired, unmotivated, etc.)
2. Consequence: how exercise affects your brain (embarrassing experience)
*Consequences may affect antecedents.
