TED TALKS: video
- 50% of people who start an exercise will stop.
- 150 minutes a week of moderate to vigorous exercise!
- $5.3 billion is the cost of crisis!
- Help people translate motivation into behaviour!!
- Sticking to an exercise program is really hard. You have to take into account a lot of
factors. Planning, temptations, scheduling, etc.
- Self-regulation: any effort by a human being to alter its own inner states or responses,
including actions, thoughts, feelings, desires and task performances. *willpower
4 Key Ingredients of Self-regulation
1. A standard or goal
2. Planning
3. Self-monitoring
4. Ability to adjust
Limited Strength Model Roy
- Some people have more self-regulation than others.
- When we engage in one act that needs self-regulation, we have a smaller pool of self-
regulation for the second act that needs self-regulation. As a result, we have impaired
self-regulation.
Get in Motion: teaches people with injuries self-regulation
What if this was for all Canadians?
Lecture Portion:
Self-regulation:
- Example of the polar bear picture was the self-regulation test.
- Perceived as very hard, most people try to avoid it
The Marshmallow Test
- These children were followed for 40 years, every 10 years they were checked on (what
was your mental health, etc.)
- Kids got to pick a range of candies, and were told if you can wait then I’ll give you two
candies, if not then eat one right now. Many couldn’t wait, many could.
- What they found: successful children mentally and physically healthier up to 40 years
later. They had better grades, lower BMI, job and financial success, greater social
networks and perceived support, less mental health concerns (anxiety, depression),
among others
- As adults, they also showed more efficient neural networks governing executive
functioning and, ultimately, self-regulatory abilities. Self-regulatory is found early on in
life. Pre-frontal cortex network/signals were sent faster, more blood flow to the brain, etc.
These kids were hardwired for this.
