“You have exerted a lot of effort so far on both the endurance and color reading tasks and I
sincerely thank you. Advancing knowledge through research is an important undertaking and
your willingness to put forth your best effort on the next task will assist our research the most. Of
course, how much effort you put into this task is ultimately up to you. If you have any questions
I would be happy to answer them.”
When motivating exercisers or athletes at the end of a physically/emotionally demanding
workout or practise:
autonomy supportive instructions Help people overcome negative effects prior self-regulation
and may enhance physical performance
Provide autonomy-supportive choice e.g., have exercisers choose the next version or type of
resistance exercise (i.e., bicep curls with a barbell, dumbbells, or bicep curls using a machine)
Controlling:
“Now it is necessary that you complete another maximum handgrip endurance trial. Your
compliance to put forth your best effort on the task is required. You must resist the temptation to
quit on this task in order to complete this endurance trial correctly. The endurance trial will start
momentarily so you should be ready and remember it is required that you put forth your
maximum possible effort. You must begin now.”
*positive feedback in the state of fatigue helps you.
Can we train self-regulation?
Those who did mental imagery, there muscles were firing a lot higher than those in the control
group. Central fatigue = inability of the brain and nervous system to send a signal down the body
to the muscle to adequately power muscles.
Caution should be taken when performing mental imagery immediately prior to:
- Performing sport and exercise-related tasks
- Physical tasks in rehabilitation settings higher muscles activation is associated with
greater perception of pain and fatigue
Motor Coordination and Self-Regulation
- Motor and cognitive development are fundamentally intertwined
- “Co-activation” of the prefrontal and cortex and cerebellum
- Effects of cognitive control exertion and motor coordination on task self-efficacy and
muscular endurance performance in children
Intention-behaviour gap: despite good intentions, could a lack of physical activity behaviour be
due to prior exertions of self-regulations? Emerging research suggests this might be the case!
IN SUMMARY
- Mind-body connection!
- Self-regulatory abilities are important for all aspects of mental + physical health, and develop
rapidly in childhood
- Exerting self-regulation is effortful and often negatively affects subsequent behaviour that
requires aspects of self-regulation

Document Summary

You have exerted a lot of effort so far on both the endurance and color reading tasks and i sincerely thank you. Advancing knowledge through research is an important undertaking and your willingness to put forth your best effort on the next task will assist our research the most. Of course, how much effort you put into this task is ultimately up to you. When motivating exercisers or athletes at the end of a physically/emotionally demanding workout or practise: autonomy supportive instructions help people overcome negative effects prior self-regulation and may enhance physical performance. Provide autonomy-supportive choice e. g. , have exercisers choose the next version or type of resistance exercise (i. e. , bicep curls with a barbell, dumbbells, or bicep curls using a machine) Now it is necessary that you complete another maximum handgrip endurance trial. Your compliance to put forth your best effort on the task is required.
