Shoulder Bones and Joints

• Four Joints:

o Sternoclavicular (SC) Joint:

▪ Sternum and clavicle

• Only direct connection of upper limb to axial

skeleton

• Has an Articular disc

o Fibrocartilage

o Absorbs shock

o Improves joint congruency

o Saddle Joint (Functionally Triaxial)

▪ Elevation/Depression

▪ Protraction/Retraction

▪ Upward/Downward rotation

• Ligaments

o Anterior SC ligament

▪ Prevents excessive retraction and

elevation

o Posterior SC ligament

▪ Prevents excessive protraction and

elevation

o Interclavicular ligament
