Lecture 17
- Caring for Mom
o Wait for placenta (generally 10 minutes) but do not
pull!
o Place sterile gauze outside the vagina to help control
the bleeding
o Encourage to start breast feeding
▪ Contracts uterus and helps control bleeding
o If bleeding excessive, massage uterus externally
- Complications of Pregnancy
o Toxemia of Pregnancy- poisoning of the blood,
generally in the 3rd trimester
▪ Risk factors: diabetes, heart disease, high BP,
kidney problems
▪ S/s: high BP, sudden swelling and weight gain,
blurred vision
▪ Tx: place on left and transport to hospital
o Spontaneous Abortion- loss of pregnancy before week
20
▪ S/s: heavy vagina bleeding, pain in lower
abdomen, tissue passing through vagina
▪ Tx: treat for shock, save all passed tissue to
transport to hospital
