Lecture 14
o Common S/S to spinal cord injuries
▪ Tenderness along spinal column
▪ Deformity of spine (rare)- that’s not normally
there
▪ Localized muscle spasm
▪ Decreased or altered sensation in extremities
▪ Weakness or loss of motor function in extremities
• Never ask pt. to move to assess pain
o Red Flag symptoms!!
▪ Urinary or fecal incontinence
▪ Priapism (uncontrolled erection)
▪ Impaired breathing
• Little or no chest movement
o Treatment for Spinal cord injuries
▪ Do no further harm
• If there is head involvement expect neck
injury
▪ Note body position
• Decerebate/Decorticate posture
▪ Stabilize head/neck
▪ Establish responsiveness
▪ Activate EMS
▪ ABCs
