Lecture 18
- Complications of Delivery
o Prolapsed Umbilical Cord- umbilical cord comes before
the baby and causes suffocation
▪ Lie on left side with knees to chest or elevated
legs with pillows and give oxygen (activate EMS
obvi)
o Breech Birth- butt first
▪ If possible transport to hostpital
▪ Allow regular birth supporting infants back with
hands and clear the face quickly
o Limb presentation- arm or leg comes out first (falcon
punch his way out)
▪ Must be delivered by physician, transport
immediately
- Multiple Births
o Deliver the same way as single babies
o 2nd baby is typically born within 10 minutes
o Clamp and cut umbilical cord of first baby before the
2nd comes out
▪ 1/3 of 2nd babies are breech
o If 2nd baby is not delivered within 10 minutes, transport
the mother to the hospital
- Premature Birth (before 36 weeks or under 5.5 pounds)
