This is good illustration of several parameters associated with fiber type and the motor unit. Remember the distinction here: motor units are the neuron and the muscle fibers and the fiber type are the one associated with those motor unit. in this illustration we have 3 diff type motor unit. All are same type same speed (fast or slow twitch) same character and same metabolic characteristic although their shading is different in the picture. Within a motor unit they are all the same. They have different names since they have been widely studied since 1970. this was when ppl got interested to study muscle fiber types. This is not too long after the rise of biopsy technique. So slow twitch oxidative, type 1 or slow twitch red are all referring to one thing. The other extreme is fast twitch glycolytic which is very poor in oxidative capacity.
