MATH 1131 Lecture 2: MATH 1131 – Introduction to Statistics I - L2
Document Summary
There are two types of statistics: descriptive graphical and numerical methods used to describe, organize and summarize data, data = condensed into numeric quantities/graphs. Inferential = techniques and methods used to analyze a small, specific set of data in order to draw conclusion about a large, more general collection of data. Inference is drawn from a dataset to make a statement about entire population. In order to solve a probability problem, certain characteristics of a population are assumed known. We then answer questions concerning a sample from that population. In a statistics problem, we assume very little about a population. We use the information about a sample to answer questions concerning the population. Example: consider all the cheeses produced in the world. Suppose 75% of them are aged less than. A sample of 20 cheeses are obtained from around the world. Describe the population and sample of the problem.
