Oldest account of the history of astronomy was in 1302 bc. Ancient oracle (turtle shell, ox bone) bone used to tell future. Chinese rulers always kept an eye on the sky. Didn"t really care about the heaven or why eclipses happened. Emperor"s used the sky to see what was happening in china. The astronomical bureau is one of the longest running bureaucracies in the world operating over 2000 years. It has provided us with the longest continuous set of sky records. Events in the sky could affect the country, emperor and he ruling family. Ancient chinese had 283 constellations, usually small made up of 2-3 stars. Helps figure out definite date of stuff from the past. Moon divided the sky into 28 wedge shapes. Jupiter, the year planet, moved around the sky over 12 years and determined the 12 different animals for chinese astrology. Felt sun, moon and stars float around empty space.
