Having despatched his music students earlier that evening, he hurried into the garden of his tall, elegant terraced house in king street to pursue the real love of his life astronomy. "in between 10 and 11, while i was observing the small stars in the neighbourhood of h. Geminorum, i perceived one that appeared visibly larger than the rest. Little did william herschel know that he was about to become the first discoverer of a new planet since the days of antiquity. Herschel was born in 1738 in germany, the son of a musician in the hanoverian foort-guards. His father isaac, taught him the violin and oboe but more to the point, instilled in both willlam and his sister caroline a deep love of astronomy. Caroline once reminished: my father was a great admirer of astronomy.
