Dating as far back as the early 1900"s, leading comic roles by actors have been a part of productions in bombay studios. These heros did serious and funny roles throughout their careers. One of the earliest comedic heroes was slicked-down haired motilal starting his career in 1934 and starring in various films like age bado(1941). He performed till his death in 1965. Then came shamsherraj kapoor who initially joined his father"s company prithvi. Theaters and went on to act in films like professor (1962) and biwi o biwi(1981). Other heroes like dilip kumar and sanjeev kumar successfully stepped into comedy around the same time and even did double-roles that were irresistible for film goers. By 1975, with chupke chupke, the serious actors amitabh and dharmendra were co-starring in comedies as well. In other films like amar akbar anthony (1977), and sattay pe satta (1982), Amitabh indulged in comic scenes and had the audience laughing.
