In the ancient period we had sanskrit drama. - from natya shastra with roots in the vedic rites. - abhnaya refers to very stylized gestures also used today in dance forms like. - musical arts as a creation of the gods. - invocation to god made at beginning of all music events. - epic poetry in conjunction with temple performance arts (music, dance). - epochal period of sanskrit drama (1st 10th cent. - 1) kalidas: abhijnanashakuntala (the recognition of shakuntala) - 2) sudraka: mrcchakatika (the little clay cart) - 3) harsha: nagananda (joy of the serpents) Stereotypical characters in dramatic situations: hero (nayaka, heroine (nayika, villain (pratinayaka, buffoon (vidushaka) - singers, plus 4 instrumental sections: strings (harps and lutes, winds (flutes mainly, drums of various kinds (according to sehramm, considered the most important group of instruments , other percussion (cymbals etc)
