Improvisation is utilized by the performer, through specific rules. Hindustani music was often performed at mehfils" (intimate concer settings with small audiences in homes of royalty) Main body of music is often preceded by an alap" ( alapana") Complex interpretation of rag, use of extensive ornamentation, only attempted by highly skilled singers.
