Different icts that have been around for centuries. Icts: describe any technology or technological system which is used to gather, retrieve, transmit, convey, manipulate, store, process or analyze information by electronic methods. Digital representations of icts: devices that use binary codes to store and communicate data. Advantage: allow users to easily transform and transmit info across a variety of platforms. Criticisms: centered on issues like privacy, corporate monopolies, the dangers of too much connectivity and information overload. Modern day icts represent a blending (convergence) of old and new technologies. Smartphones combine computers, broadcasting and digital media. Relationship between icts and society: how individuals and institutions have been shaped by these systems and conversely, how these technologies have been shaped by people and organizations. ** (mis) understanding the impact of icts on society: technological determinism** Technological determinism attempts to explain the relationship between technology and society. Technology is the prime agent of social, political, economic and organizational change.
