Motivation: it is what causes, channels & sustains people"s behavior, it cannot be measured or observed it is just inferred from people"s behavior. The extent to which persistent effort is directed towards a goal. Characteristics of motivation: motivation is seen through effort, persistence and direction. Effort: the strength of person"s work related effort or amt of effort applied. Direction: involves channeling the persistent effort towards the organization"s goals. Intrinsic: is motivation that comes from the direct relationship between the worker and the task. Extrinsic: is motivation that comes from the environment external to the task. Self-actualization - need for self development/ personal growth, intrinsic fulfillment. Esteem needs - need for external validation of self worth, ego gratification, recognition, prestige, sense of self respect. Social needs - the need to belong, to be accepted by others, to be affiliatve, to have social contacts.
