NATS 1540 Lecture Notes - Lecture 68: Superior Vena Cava, Pericardial Fluid, Circulatory System
Document Summary
List the main events of the cardiac cycle: Diastole: ventricles relax and fill with blood (2/3 of cardiac cycle) Systole: blood is pumped from the ventricles and fills the pulmonary and systemic. Pressure in atria is greater than the pressure in the ventricles arteries (heart contraction; 1/3 of cardiac cycle) Av valves are closed; aortic valves are open (blood is ejected) Diastole again: four valves are closed and ventricles relax (av valves open again) Contrast and compare a bruit and a murmur. Differentiate between carotid artery pulsations and jugular vein pulsations in the neck. Volume and pressure increase when the right side of the heart fails to pump efficiently (jugular vein will expose this). Increased systolic bp: left ventricular wall thickening. Use the clues provided to unscramble the cardiovascular findings that may be noted during a cardiovascular history and assessment. This occurs when the heart"s valvular supply cannot keep up with the body"s demands.
