Herd immunity describes a type of immunity that occurs when the vaccination of a portion of the population provides protection to unprotected individuals. You want to get infected by these types of viruses early in life so the symptoms are not so severe. 18 year olds, that is a terrible situation. It is not pleasant to get these types of viruses when you are older. 10% of people with chicken pox who got it when they were older got it by themselves. If you get chicken pox the second time, it is going to be a lot milder. Another version of chicken pox is shingles; it comes a lot later in life, like around 60 years old. A good idea to prevent this from happening is to vaccinate them between ages 40-60.
