1. CELL STRUCTURE & FUNCTIONS
CELL:
Smallest living unit of an organism.
All cells have 3 things in common: membrane, cytoplasm, & DNA
(genetic material).
Cell Membrane: which separates the cell from its environment.
Separates the cytoplasm of the cell from its environment
Protects the cell & controls what enters and leaves
Cell membranes are selectively permeable only allowing
certain materials to enter or leave
Composed of a lipid bilayer made of phospholipid molecules
Cytoplasm: a jelly like fluid.
DNA: cells genetic material, found within in the nucleus of
Eukaryotic cells, not in Prokaryotic cells.
Cells maintain their shape through cytoskeleton, which includes
micro-filaments (which are made of protein) & micro-tubules
which are thin hollow tubes.
Principles of the Cell Theory
All living things are made of one or more cells
Cells are the basic unit of structure & function in
organisms
Cells come only from the reproduction of existing cells
III. Cell Diversity
Not all cells are alike
Cells differ in size, shape, and function
The female egg cell is the largest cell in the body & can
be seen without a microscope
2 TYPES OF CELLS:
EUKARYOTIC CELLS:
Plant & animal cells with a nucleus & membrane-enclosed
organelles. More advanced & complex cells found in plats
and animals.
PROKARYOTIC CELLS:
